About the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS)
“The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) stands as Canada’s largest Indigenous police service, committed to community policing and ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of the communities within the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) territory in northern Ontario.
Founded in 1994, NAPS was established to meet the unique needs of First Nations Police, emphasizing culturally sensitive approaches that are deeply rooted in respect for Indigenous values, traditions, and ways of life.
The NAPS First Nations Police Association (NFNPA) was established in 2024 to represent the collective bargaining interests and well-being of its Uniform and Civilian membership. Committed to community policing, the NFNPA plays a vital role in advocating for First Nations police officers and their unique needs. As an independent Not-For-Profit Corporation, the Police Association has a special fiduciary responsibility to promote the profession of policing, particularly within the Nishnawbe Aski region. The NFNPA will diligently advocate for and represent our Members in various public and workplace forums, ensuring that we remain a strong voice for our community.
